Rubaiyat :

A culmination of our 130-year legacy of
producing dry wines.

Winery

In May 1890, our founder Jisaku Omura built a modest winery in the garden of his house. Over the ensuing 130 years, four generations of Omuras have dedicated themselves to winemaking in the hopes that as many people as possible will savor the authentic taste of our Japanese wines. Since the days when sweet wines were all the rage, we have aligned our focus with global preferences by specializing in the making of dry wines. We strive to produce world-class Japanese wines through relentless experimentation in the cultivation and vinification of the traditional Japanese grape variety Koshu, as well as renowned European grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Our Story

The Origin of Rubaiyat

The brand name of our wine is “Rubaiyat,” which means quatrain. One day in 1956, Mr. Sekikawa, an acquaintance of Tadao Omura, our third president, from Japan’s Home Ministry, visited our winery with famed poet Konosuke Hinatsu. When we served him our carefully crafted wine, he was extremely delighted and said, “This is delicious.” Later, when we asked Mr. Hinatsu through Mr. Sekikawa to come up with our brand name, he readily agreed.

Mr. Hinatsu suggested the brand name “Rubaiyat” after a collection of poems by the Persian poet Omar Khayyam. This is due to the fact that many verses written about wine are contained in Rubaiyat.

This is how Rubaiyat came to be the brand name of our wine.

Our Commitment

to Home-Grown Grapes

Grapes are the raw material for wine.
While we also use grapes from contract grape producers in our winemaking,
above all, we pride ourselves on producing wine from grapes grown in our own vines.

Grape and Wine-Producing Region

Katsunuma

Katsunuma-cho in Yamanashi Prefecture’s Koshu City is located on the eastern edge of the Kofu Basin and can be reached by train from Tokyo in about an hour and a half. Situated near Mt. Fuji and surrounded by lush green mountains, Katsunuma is blessed with abundant nature. Long renowned for growing various fruit trees, today it is recognized as one of Japan’s premier grape and wine-producing regions.

History of
Koshu Grapes

The Koshu grape, which has become internationally recognized in recent years, is the most important native grape variety in Japan. It is believed to have been introduced from the Caucasus region of Central Asia across the Silk Road to China and then across the sea to Japan about 1,000 years ago. It has taken root as an indigenous grape variety in Katsunuma, a region characterized by its inland climate with large temperature differences, high amounts of sunshine, and little rainfall, all of which are ideal for cultivating grapes.

History of
Winemaking
in Katsunuma

In August 1877, Japan’s first winemaking company – Dainippon Yamanashi Wine Company – was established in the town of Katsunuma under the Japanese government’s policy of promoting the development of new industries. In the year of its establishment, the company sent two young men, Masanari Takano and Ryuken Tsuchiya, to France (Troyes), the home of wine, to study winemaking in earnest.
The duo returned to Japan with a mission in mind and immediately set about making wine in the authentic French style. For white wine, they used Koshu grapes, and for red wine, they used Adirondack grapes procured from a seed farm in Tokyo. Since then, many wineries have worked tirelessly to produce wine, and today Katsunuma is home to about 30 wineries.

Winery Tour

Marufuji Winery is one of the oldest wineries in Katsunuma, Yamanashi, the heart of Japanese winemaking. For four generations, the Omura family has carefully preserved and handed down the buildings that remind us of our beginnings. We have curated a tour route that allows visitors to experience the history of the winery as well as the winery today.
